Astronomers have detected the brightest and most distant astrophysical maser yet — a gigamaser about 8 billion light-years away, revealing extreme energetic phenomena across the universe. The DESI map can help pinpoint the large-scale environments and host galaxies of such rare, luminous sources, improving understanding of where and when they appear. This complements multiwavelength searches that are uncovering a wide diversity of extreme cosmic phenomena.
