Artemis 2’s lunar flyby and the contemporaneous crew aboard China’s Tiangong space station produced a new record for the greatest distance ever between humans. Artemis 2 traveled farther from Earth than anyone in history during its planned loop around the Moon, while Tiangong remained in low Earth orbit. China’s Shenzhou 23 launch, which sent three astronauts to Tiangong including one set for a yearlong stay to study human adaptation, underscores simultaneous, complementary human spaceflight objectives and will be considered alongside Artemis 2’s postflight inspections and data analysis.
