Scientists report that beneath East Africa's Turkana Rift the crust is thinning into a narrow “neck,” an advanced rifting stage that suggests the continent may be closer to breaking apart than previously thought. This extreme thinning, accompanied by volcanic activity, could eventually lead to formation of a new ocean basin if rifting continues. The finding echoes other recent geologic discoveries (such as studies of shallow magmatic systems at Yellowstone) and is important for paleoanthropology because the Rift preserves key early human fossils like 'Little Foot.'
