Overview
Section 702, which supports a large share of U.S. foreign-intelligence collection, was briefly kept alive by a short-term extension and has now been reauthorized for three years by the House. Lawmakers and civil liberties advocates continue to warn the longer renewal may enable warrantless collection that sweeps up U.S. persons unless new limits are added.
