
NASA has begun buying hardware for an initial lunar base, awarding hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts to four U.S. companies for landers, rovers and drones. The purchases formalize the agency’s shift toward a sustained surface presence and follow the recent Artemis II lunar flyaround, using commercial partners to accelerate deliveries and operations. The move complements planned increases in robotic lander procurements but also heightens the need for strong testing and oversight given existing program risks.
