Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui said Cole Allen is being mistreated in the D.C. jail and held under conditions markedly harsher than many Jan. 6 defendants, some of whom were moved to the Central Treatment Facility. At a detention hearing Faruqui pressed the government to justify the harsher treatment and raised concerns about mental-health monitoring and differential custody decisions. The judge’s remarks add to growing scrutiny of detention conditions after other allegations of medical neglect in jails, including a case where a pregnant inmate says staff ignored her preterm labor. These developments are drawing renewed attention to how custody and health monitoring are managed across facilities.
