A surge of solar wind is expected to trigger geomagnetic storms tonight and tomorrow, potentially making the Northern Lights visible as far south as Illinois and Oregon. Watches have been issued across multiple northern U.S. states and millions of people could see auroras if skies are clear. New methods for mapping magnetic fields on the Sun’s far side from sound waves may help identify the active regions that spawn such storms even when those regions are out of direct view, improving forecasts and warning lead times.
