Google will begin penalising websites that block or hijack the browser back button starting in June, treating the behaviour as harmful to basic navigation and user experience. The change targets tactics that trap users or interfere with expected browser controls and is intended to protect consistent navigation. It complements recent Chrome interface and usability updates, such as vertical tabs and a cleaner Reading Mode, as part of a broader push to simplify and standardise browsing.
