Amazon notified owners it would end support for Kindle e-readers released in 2012 or earlier and has now enacted that cutoff, preventing those devices from accessing the Kindle Store and new cloud content. Owners can still read previously downloaded ebooks, but many will need to upgrade or rely on local copies; some users are attempting jailbreaking to regain features. The change is expected to affect resale and secondhand markets and underscores Amazon's shift toward newer hardware and cloud-driven services.
