NASA's Psyche spacecraft performed a close gravity-assist flyby of Mars on May 15, passing about 2,800–3,000 miles (4,500–4,800 km) above the surface at roughly 12,333 mph (19,848 kph). The maneuver used Mars' gravity to boost speed and adjust trajectory toward the asteroid Psyche, and the spacecraft also captured rare images of Mars from a high approach angle, adding scientific and outreach value to the mission.
