A new study reports that the amino acid arginine can reduce buildup of toxic amyloid proteins in the brain, suggesting a simple supplement might modify core Alzheimer’s pathology. The observational association between egg consumption and lower Alzheimer’s risk complements mechanistic supplement research by indicating that whole foods or their nutrients may also impact disease risk. Together, these findings support testing dietary and supplement strategies in controlled human trials to evaluate efficacy, mechanisms and safety.
